Did you know there are many Gyoza shops in Kobe? and that they have a special sauce for their gyoza?

Normally, gyoza sauce is a combination of soy sauce and vinegar, but in Kobe we have Miso dare (味噌だれ, which is a combination of Miso, Sugar, Soy, Vinegar, Sake, Garlic, etc). It is a little sweet when compared to the regular sauce, but it is a must try if you live or are coming to Kobe.

While Kobe beef is on the map of most tourists coming to town, please do not forget Kobe’s other specialties 🙂

This very popular shop is only 2min from JR Motomachi station. The last time I went there (which was around 5 pm), I was lucky in that I did not have to queue-up as you normally would.

Akaman Gyoza – Need to know facts:

  • As a minimum order, you need to order two plates per person.
  • Their gyozas are small and crispy
  • They only sell Gyoza and Beer
  • They have white Miso sauce
  • You only can use one plate per person
  • When they are extremely busy, you may not be able to have a second order, so I suggest you think with your stomach and place an initial order accordingly!

Gyoza Daigaku is located in a narrow alley in the heart of Chinatown. To get there, you can walk straight for about 5 minutes on Motomachi Shopping Street and turn south. You can also follow the same directions but pass through Chinatown instead.

This is another very popular shop. Whenever I pass by the store, there is always a line of waiting customers.

I had always had wanted to go right as the store opened, but at the time, I arrived at around 5:30 pm (30min after opening). However, I was lucky to get inside in about 10 minutes. Orders were taken while waiting in line. You can not order more!

Gyoza Daigaku – Need to know facts:

  • If you have to line-up, orders are taken outside as you wait.
  • You can only order once, so think carefully and quickly!
  • Once inside, you cannot add to your initial order!
  • You need to order a minimum of two plates per person.
  • Their gyozas are crispy and slightly bigger than Akaman’s Gyozas.
  • They have rice on the menu.
  • They have white miso sauce.
  • To make the sauce for their Gyoza, add 2 scoops of miso, 1 scoop of chili oil, and a little bit of soy sauce and vinegar (to taste).

Keep in mind that this is a busy, small shop with narrow seating. There is very little space for large bags or luggage which you need to keep by your side. I suggest you just bring your wallet and mobile phone 🙂

When I was there, I had the opportunity to see a staff member (who was seated beside me!) make dumplings with remarkable speed and precision! Actually, they were kind enough to let me film them during the process. It was fun just watching them 🙂

At the time, I did not know the size of their gyozas so I ordered the 2 plate minimum order and a glass of draft beer. It was very tasty and I soon realized I could have eaten 3 plates 🙂

Tap beer / Bottle of beer(Medium size)¥450 / ¥480

This shop is located in the underground section of the Sannomiya plaza, and is about 10min from Sannomiya Station.

It is not a gyoza specialty store but they serve a variety of gyoza which are juicy and tasty. You can also choose from grilled or steamed gyoza. They serve chicken karaage, sweet and sour pork, fried rice, etc. It is one of those places where it is best to go with a few friends so you easily sample a number of dishes.

The staff are generally friendly, in particular, one female staff member is very kind. When my friend and I went there during the 2019 Rugby World Cup season, she kindly change the TV channel for us to watch the game 🙂

I particularly like their chicken karaage and boiled gyoza 🙂 Enjoy!
